General Foot Care Information
Plantar Fasciitis
Definition
Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation and swelling of a large ligament called the plantar fascia, usually at it ’s insertion on the heel bone. The plantar fascia does not stretch as well as other tissues, and often pulls away from the bone. Over time this often results in a bony spur formation on the heel.
Symptoms
Often heel pain can be persistent, but commonly is worse early in the morning, getting slightly better through the day only to become painful at night. This relates to weight bearing periods and the process of inflammation and tissue repair. Pain is located on the bottom of the heel, usually towards the inside.
Cause
There are numerous causes of Heel Pain / Plantar Fasciitis, but most often they relate to excessive stress on the plantar fascia.
This can occur through:
- Over-pronation / Arch Collapse
- Foot injury
- Over-weight
- Changes in physical activity
- Poor / inappropriate footwear
Treatment
- Reduce the excessive stress on the plantar fascia
- Orthotics
- Footwear Assessment
- Stretches and strengthening exercises for the feet and lower limb
- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
We can help you with all of the above. On occasion we may ask that you try a non-steroidal anti-Inflammatory drug and will ask that you consult with your GP before commencing any medication.
