General Foot Care Information

Neuroma or Nerve Impingement

Definition

Neuroma is a common foot problem associated with pain, swelling and/or inflammation of a nerve usually at the ball of the foot, and often extending between the toes.

Symptoms

  • Sharp shooting pain in the forefoot and toes
  • Burning sensation in the forefoot and toes
  • Numbness in the forefoot and toes
  • Tingling and even cramping in the forefoot and toes
  • Swelling and discolouration of the forefoot and toes

Cause

Neuroma or Nerve Impingement is often caused by abnormal foot function, where bones in the forefoot can pinch on a nerve, most often between the 3rd and 4th toes. Symptoms usually occur   when wearing particular shoes that increases the weight bearing on the ball of the foot or are constrictive around the forefoot such as high heals and very pointy shoes.

Early treatment can help a quicker recovery and get you back playing the sports and doing the things that you love.

Treatment

  • Footwear assessment
  • Orthotics / Insoles
  • Exercises for muscles within the foot
  • RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
  • Surgery for severe cases.

We can help you with all of the above. On occasion we may ask that you try a non-steroidal anti-Inflammatory drug and will ask that you consult with your GP before commencing any medication.
